Gunning Mix: The Ideal Material for High-Temperature Kilns

Home > Single Post

In high-temperature industrial sectors such as steel, cement, glass, and chemical engineering, kiln linings are perpetually subjected to harsh conditions including extreme heat, corrosion, erosion, and thermal shock, making localized damage inevitable. Gunning Mix, a monolithic refractory material applied via a spraying method, has become the ideal choice for hot repair and lining construction in high-temperature kilns due to its distinct advantages of rapid construction, timely repair, and excellent lining integrity. Our company is dedicated to the research, development, and production of high-quality gunning mixes, providing customers with efficient, reliable, and customized refractory solutions.

What is Gunning Mix?

Gunning Mix is a monolithic refractory material formulated from refractory aggregates, powders, binders, and additives. It is propelled onto the construction surface using compressed air via spraying equipment, relying on its own adhesiveness to form a dense lining. Depending on the application scenario, it is categorized into cold gunning mix (suitable for constructing new linings) and hot gunning mix (suitable for hot repair without shutting down the furnace). Gunning mix construction requires no molds, adapts well to complex shapes, and is particularly suitable for localized rapid repair, overall lining spraying, and furnace lining protection layer construction.

Core Performance Advantages

  • Excellent Thermal Shock Resistance. Optimized particle gradation and binder systems allow it to withstand drastic temperature changes without cracking or spalling, extending furnace lining life.
  • High Bonding Strength. A unique formulation ensures strong adhesion to the substrate, maintaining excellent attachment even during vertical or overhead construction to prevent detachment.
  • Rapid Curing. Utilizing high-efficiency binders and accelerators, it achieves sufficient strength within hours of construction, significantly reducing furnace downtime.
  • Superior Corrosion Resistance. Designed for harsh conditions involving molten steel, slag, and alkali metal vapor, it possesses outstanding resistance to chemical corrosion.
  • High Construction Flexibility. Suitable for various kilns such as converters, electric arc furnaces, ladles, tundishes, rotary kilns, and reheating furnaces, enabling both localized precise repair and overall lining spraying.

Main Product Types

  • High-Alumina Gunning Mix: With an Al₂O₃ content of 50%-80%, it is suitable for general high-temperature areas such as blast furnaces, hot blast stoves, and rotary kilns.
  • Corundum Gunning Mix: With an Al₂O₃ content of ≥90%, it offers extremely high high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance, ideal for key areas like electric arc furnace roofs, ladles, and torpedo ladles.
  • Magnesia Gunning Mix: With an MgO content of ≥85%, it has strong resistance to basic slag corrosion and is mainly used for lining repair in converters, electric arc furnaces, and refining furnaces.
  • Magnesia-Chrome Gunning Mix: The addition of chromium oxide provides superior corrosion and thermal shock resistance, suitable for severe conditions in ladle refining furnaces and non-ferrous smelting furnaces.
  • Low-Cement Gunning Mix: Characterized by low cement content, high medium-to-high temperature strength, and good resistance to slag penetration, it is suitable for overall spraying construction of linings in large-scale kilns.

Product Selection Guide

Selection requires comprehensive consideration of the following factors:

  • Operating Temperature: Choose the corresponding grade (e.g., 1300℃, 1500℃, 1700℃) based on the kiln’s maximum working temperature.
  • Chemical Environment: Select the corresponding material type (e.g., alumina-magnesia, magnesia, silica) based on acidic, basic, or neutral slag conditions.
  • Construction Conditions: Determine dry or wet spraying schemes based on shutdown duration, construction space, and equipment availability.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Balance material costs with service life to choose the most cost-effective solution.

Gunning mix plays an irreplaceable role in high-temperature industrial kiln lining construction and hot repair due to its unique advantages of efficient construction, timely repair, and excellent integrity. Leveraging years of technical accumulation and extensive on-site experience, we are committed to providing customers in the steel, cement, glass, non-ferrous, and petrochemical industries with stable-performance, easy-to-apply gunning mix products and supporting technical services.
